Financial Empowerment Grant Program
The Financial Empowerment Grant Program provides matched-savings grants to individuals building financial literacy through Open Finance Academy’s curriculum, helping them start an emergency fund or a first investment account.
Starting up
How it works
- Learn — complete a defined set of lessons from the Knowledge library covering budgeting, saving, and the basics of investing.
- Save — open a savings or custodial investment account and contribute what you can toward a goal (emergency fund, retirement starter account, or first taxable brokerage account).
- Apply — submit an application scored against a published, objective rubric: financial need, lesson completion, and consistency of saving. No exceptions are made outside the published criteria.
- Match — approved applicants receive a matching grant, up to a set cap, deposited toward the account they opened.
This structure is modeled on established Individual Development Account (IDA) programs, which pair matched savings with financial education and have a long track record with U.S. regulators and community-development funders.
Why a matched grant, not a handout
Matching a saver’s own contribution reinforces the habit the education program teaches, and it lets a modest amount of grant funding support many more participants than a lump-sum gift would.
Funding
Grants are funded from realized returns on Open Finance Academy’s fiscally-sponsored investment pool, not from principal — see About for the organization’s approach to funding its programs.
Status
This program is in the design phase. The scoring rubric, award caps, and application process are being finalized before the first funding cycle opens. Follow the Blog for updates, or see Projects for other programs.
